North Shore United's U14 Girls team came agonizingly close to a berth in the US Youth Soccer Region II championship game on Monday, dropping 2-1 heartbreaker to Campton United of Illinois in the semifinals.

"The girls really played great," said Coach Joe Hammes. "Anyone who watched that game would say we controlled it."

Down 1-0 in the first half in Appleton, NSU equalized before halftime through Hayley Block, who volleyed home a cross from Josie Keldermann.

The match appeared headed for extra time, but a long-range set free kick by Campton United found the net in the last few minutes for the deciding goal.

NSU had won both its group games by a 6-2 margin to win the bracket. It's last game was rained out.

The club's other regional qualifier, the U17 girls, was 0-1-1 and also was rained out in the final game.

Region II championship games will be streamed live on Wednesday. Winners qualify for the national championships in Tulsa, OK, July 21-26
