NSU Alumni Off to Great Start in College

Alumni Update:

Minnesota: Josee Stiever was named Big Ten player of the week after scoring two goals and dishing out two assists in the Gophers victories over Kansas and Utah.  Freshman Nikki Albrecht and Senior Rashida Beal started both games for the Gophers, with Albrect recording one shot.  This weekend the Gophers host North Dakota and Eastern Michigan.

Southeast Missouri State also started the year off well, beating Tennessee 1-0 and Illinois Springfield 3-1.  Natasha Minor led the way with a goal and an assist, while Kaitlin Kuznacic added an assist.  Angie Mann, Shay Darga, and Paige Blankenheim  all started for the Red Hawks, and Freshman Maria Salm contributed valuable minutes in both games.  This week our former players come home to play at Green Bay on Thursday and at UWM on Sunday.

Continuing the trend, Wisconsin Milwaukee also started 2-0 picking up wins against Akron 1-0 and Northern Illinois 3-1.  Junior Anna Smalley picked up from her strong season last year and recorded two assists.  Junior Jen Eberhardy scored a goal against Northern Illinois.  Maddie Tetzke recorded a shot on goal in both games.  Anne West was out with an injury.  This weekend the Panthers play at Wisconsin and host Southeast Missouri State.

Speaking of Northern Illinois, the Huskies tied Illinois Chicago 0-0 and dropped the above-mentioned game to UWM.  Freshman Abby Gregg started both games for the Huskies and sophomore defenseman Cassidy Page logged a lot of minutes over the weekend.  This weekend the Huskies host Western Illinois.

Sticking in the state of Illinois, Freshman Ari Banks and Amanda Durst started in both the 0-0 tie versus Green Bay, as well as the 1-0 loss to Fordam.  Banks recorded 2 shots and a yellow card, and Durst played all 90 minutes on Sunday.  This weekend the Ramblers travel to Arizona State and host Valparaiso.

Reigning state high school player of the year Olivia Myszewski continued her winning ways posting 7 saves in her first collegiate start, a 2-1 victory over Toledo.  The performance earned her MAAC Rookie of the Week honors.  The Bobcats play UMass Lowell tonight, NJIT on Friday and Seton Hall on Monday.

Freshman Julia Lehnen saw action in both of Valparaiso’s games this past weekend.  The Crusaders lost two tough matches to IUPUI 2-0 and Bowling Green 1-0.  Valpo hosts New Mexico State Friday night, before traveling to Loyola on Sunday.

Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Bolland and the Creighton Blue Jays beat Iowa 5-3 and tied Missouri – Kansas City 1-1.  This weekend Creighton hosts Nebraska Omaha and Iowa State.

Freshman Merin Mundt and the Iowa State Cyclones lost a 5-2 decision to Florida on Friday before bouncing back with a 1-0 win over South Dakota State on Sunday.  This weekend the Cyclones play Creighton.

Freshman Adrianna Henry started her Indiana State career with a 3-0 victory over Western Illinois. Henry recorded a shot in the Sycamores 4-0 loss to Louisville.  Indiana State hosts Akron and IUPUI this weekend.

Sophomore Sammy Lehnen helped lead the Western Illinois Leathernecks to a split this weekend.  The Leathernecks lost to Indiana State 3-0, before beating Chicago State 3-1.  Western Illinois plays Northern Illinois this weekend. 

Across the state, sophomore midfielder Elisabeth Held picked up a shot on goal in the Panthers opening weekend losses to Bowling Green 1-0 and Fort Wayne 2-0.

Shannon Greeley returned to action after missing last year due to injury, and helped lead Ball State to a 3-1 victory against Eastern Kentucky and a 4-1 victory over IUPUI.  The Cardinals play Xavier and Fort Wayne this weekend.

Hannah Groth kicked off her senior season at Stony Brook leading a strong defense in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Bryant University and a 1-1 tie against Sacred Heart (played all 110 minutes).  The Sea Wolves play Boston College Thursday night.

Katie Bares looks to improve on her All-American season last year at Viterbo. Katie picked up an assist as the V-Hawks dropped a pair of road games to Northwestern Ohio 3-0 and Siena Heights 2-1.  Viterbo returns home this weekend to host Northwestern College.

Looking to start their seasons this week, freshman Brooke Bares, St. Cloud State, at Winona State sophomores Mackenzie Challoner and Kirsten Windbiel, and Junior Mikaella Sabinash, and Lexie Gauger kicks off her senior season at Minnesota Crookston. 

Starting September 1, Kayla Schlosser begins her sophomore season at Concordia, Jami Lessila begins her sophomore season at Elmhurst,  Sophomore Alexis Brewer at Oshkosh, and Taylor Skorik her senior season at St. Thomas.
